150KV Line Voltage Drop

150KV Line Voltage Drop

150KV Line Voltage Drop

(OP)
Dear All,

My friend has problem on 150KV trasmission line about 100km's voltage drop to 120-130KV.

The qustion:
- What is the main cause of this problem usually..all of lead, tower and distance are under rating
- Is there any technic of installing capacitors to correct the voltage drop on HV system..?
- Or is that any corellation between Main step-up transformer that installed at the power plant site..?

Thank you for your kind attention and help.

Regards,
Eskim

RE: 150KV Line Voltage Drop

The answer is "it depends". It depends on the system configuration, load, conductor, spacing etc. Is this a radial line? Capacitors can help if the load has low power factor.

Review of a good power engineering text such as Stevenson, "Power Systems Analysis", may be helpful.

RE: 150KV Line Voltage Drop

Power transfer is not specified, but voltage drop is so significant that a voltage/load profile study by an experienced firm would likely have a fast return on investment.

Suggestion: The transmission line parameters would have to be reviewed. Sometimes, it is a small cross-sectional area of the conductor, other time it is the transmission line impedance. Shunt capacitors or in-line capacitors may be used. However, the in-line capacitors tend to produce sub harmonics that are detrimental to turbo-generators.
