carrying forward construction lines for reference?

carrying forward construction lines for reference?

carrying forward construction lines for reference?

(OP)
Hi,
I created a set of construction lines and used them as my reference for a sketch.   On a new sketch why can i not use those constuction lines from the previous sketch to reference a new sketch.  I hope that makes some sense.
I'm trying to avoid redrawing construction lines that use multiple references.

Thanks

RE: carrying forward construction lines for reference?

Gerry,

Put the construction lines in a seperate sketch that is not consumed by a feature.  Subsequent sketches can use the construction geometry.

RE: carrying forward construction lines for reference?

Open your new sketch.  Highlight the lines you would like to convert.  Use the CONVERT ENTITIES tool on the sketch toolbar.  The lines will be added to your new sketch.  If you converted construction lines they will be rregular lines in the new sketch and you will need to change them back to construction by highlighting and using the change construction geometry tool found on the sketch toolbar.

To reference the lines found in another sketch in a different sketch trying turning your LINE FILTER (located on the filters toolbar) on and then selecting the line for dimensioning, relation, etc.  Sometimes SolidWorks won't recognize the lines unless you specifically filter for them.

RE: carrying forward construction lines for reference?

Something else.  To see the sketches (so you can refrence them in another sketch) used for a feature creation you need to expand the feature first and SHOW the sketch.  To do this click the + next to the feature in the design tree.  You will now see the sketch or sketches used to create the feature grayed out.  Right click and select show.  The sketch is now visible and can be used for refrence.

Right....Show sketch, man that solves alot of problems.  I had them disapearing on me before, but now it makes total sense.

thanks very much!!!

RE: carrying forward construction lines for reference?

I came on to post a thread to find this out, show sketches, how simple and stupid, it was doing my head in, but nice 1 cheers, i can begin growing my hair back now.

RE: carrying forward construction lines for reference?

You might also consider the merits (and demerits) of derived sketches.  I believe they can use sketches consumed by features.

(I Like that expression! Sketches "consumed" by features - very descriptive and has a cool sound to it - kinda Tolkienish - nice one, timelord.)
