Powder Metal Design Guidelines

(OP)
Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of a web resource on Sintered part design?

I am particularly interested in height to wall thickness ratios....basically how thin can I have a wall for a given height.

I believe that there are difficulties in filling the cavity and in the transference of the compacting pressure. Unfortunately I have found difficult to get any literature on this subject.

Thanks in advance!

J.

RE: Powder Metal Design Guidelines

Jalipa,

There may be information of interest to you at GKN Sinter Metals' Powder Metals (P/M) University (www.gknsintermetals.com/index.cfm/fa/hm.home/sec/8/y/in...).

Best regards,

RE: Powder Metal Design Guidelines

I had good experience with PM when associated with a creative PM shop. I learned about copper infiltration during sintering to enhance gear strength and toughness. We also arrived at oil bath emersion off the sintering conveyor. This helped make the difference between overload failures and test and service reliability. In addition, good die design will enhance tooth density in the PM process.

Jalipa,
Remember this rule, Thickness => 1/6 Height.
For gear teeth, modulus must be =>0.3
