Hi everyone,

I'm now working on the simulation of the governor control in a Hydro plant. Does anyone work in this area before? Are you using the IEEE model(1992) to simulate the hydraulic system?

I have doubt at one of the equations used by IEEE:

Power=AtHQ-DGdw/dt

where At=turbine gain, H=net head, Q=flow rate, D=damping factor, G=gate opening, dw/dt=derivative of turbine speed


How can we determine the Damping factor D?

According to Kundur, the recommended value for D=0.5 (for Francis turbine).
 
Anyone know how Kundur actually come out with this value?

Thanks for your reply, jbartos.

These papers don't really mention anything regarding the damping factor D that I'm talking about here.

As far as I'm aware, this term first appeared in 1992 IEEE nonlinear model and everybody is using it since that time. However, no one has actually explained how the value is determined. Kind of weird to me......

Reference 2 indicates that "There is also a speed deviation damping effect (implying D) which is a function of gate opening." See Reference 3.
