Welding 316 SS to Copper

Welding 316 SS to Copper

Welding 316 SS to Copper

(OP)
We are at small workshop in Spain producing parts for special HVAC equipment and need to weld copper tubes to 316 plates for water condensate removal.

We are used to solder copper to copper with silver as well as welding plates of galvanised steel. I think that SS cannot welded  to copper using the same material as for carbon steel. Does anybody knows how could we make this?

Thank you everybody

RE: Welding 316 SS to Copper

ERNi-1 can be used to weld Cu to 316 SS.

RE: Welding 316 SS to Copper

Interesting tip stanweld. Pls inform the process to be used ? Will  TIG do ?

RE: Welding 316 SS to Copper

Would recommend TIG welding.  The joint can be completed using a relatively high preheat temperature (>450F) due to the high thermal conductivity of Cu.  Fot thicker materials, you may wish to initially butter the Cu side of the joint with the ERNi-1 filler metal prior to completeing the weld.

Please note that silver solders can also be used to braze 316 SS to Cu.

RE: Welding 316 SS to Copper

stanweld,
One other material we used to weld/braze Cu to S/S was
Everdure 1010 Silicon Bronze.  I don't know wether it's still around.

RE: Welding 316 SS to Copper

Everdure is still available and also maybe asking for just SIlicon Bronze should get you some different pricing and manufactorers, Everdure I believe is the brand name by Stoody.
Good luck with this in Spain.
