V notch calculation

V notch calculation

(OP)
Dear all,

I was checking for the strains around a V notch (single edge). I was wondering if it is possible to calculate the stresses at any point around the notch using theory of elasticity? I have heard of Williams, but i do not know if his formulas are of any help. Or do you think I would be better off doing an FE analysis?
Any suggestions are welcome!

RE: V notch calculation

It is possible to calculate stresses around a notch using elasticity.  I do not know who Williams is.  FEM analysis will be able to answer the question, you jus need a good model and a fine mesh near the notch.  If you don't want to do FEM analysis, then review a book on Fracture Mechanics.  A good one is Fracture Mechanics by T. L. Anderson.

RE: V notch calculation

Stress concentration factors for V notches are given in Peterson and in Roark, forumlas for stress and strain.

Another method is to do photoelastic analysis.

thanx all for the help,
I did an FEA. I also calculated the stresses by stress concentration using K. The two values are pretty close together.
thx again,
