transforme synchronous generator to compensator

(OP)
Hi gentlemans
I have many gas turbine that comes to end of life,
can i use there generator as synchronous compensator? are the cranking motor typically able to run the machine until the full speed? is they will be any special specification for the step up transformer? ( because it will be loaded only by reactive power and i worry for the harmonics)
do you recommend me any document on the web?
thank you

RE: transforme synchronous generator to compensator

It may be time well spent reviewing the adequacy of the protective relaying, and verify that the existing excitation system has adequate capacity.  There should not be problems with the transformer as long as saturation is avoided.  As for harmonics, if there are none significant in operation of the exsitng system, synchonous-condenser operation should be acceptable.

RE: transforme synchronous generator to compensator

Suggestion: The generator capability curve has to be taken into consideration when generating the capacitive kVARs or MVARs. Also, the system stability may become a concern because of potential oscillations if abrupt changes (transients) in kVARs happen. Also, subharmonics may develop depending on the power distribution system and in line capacitors.
