Best Gasket/seal for pressure vessel
Best Gasket/seal for pressure vessel
(OP)
I'm sealing a 5ft X 2ft opening on a pressure vessel filled with water (144psi). Opening will be covered with a flat aluminum plate. The plate will be bolted to the surface of the pressure vessel. What is the best type or style gasket for the job? How do you calculate the thickness needed and the material of the gasket? How do you figure out member stiffnes K(m) for a gasket? Is there a reference that covers gasket formulas, material properties, and constants?
Thank you,
Billydelo

1. Must be conformable to the flange faces
2. Must exhibit resistance to hi temp., high surface press., and chemical attack.
3. Must remain tight at all service conditions.
For your application I would recommend either red rubber (std. low temp. water service type gasket) or a composition type gasket (better at high temp.)
For information on gaskets and gasketed joints, pickup the book, "Gaskets & Gasketed Joints" by John H. Bickford, publisher Marcel Dekker of New York, NY.
Hope this helps.
