trouble installing Suse7.0

trouble installing Suse7.0

trouble installing Suse7.0

(OP)
Hallo,

I know today should appear on the market Suse 7.2 but I like to install my 7.0 again.

Problem: the installation of linux (see the 348 packages-standard+office-) are not a problem. Now, if I' m installing with Yast2, then after the linux installation, Sax2 will try to start automatically, but what I get is again the screen for the installation of the packages. It appear with strange color (almost green) and "dead/frozen". I can not doing anything more, only push the reset button.
If I install linux with yast1 (textbased) then it's again all ok till the moment I have to start Sax io order to configure mouse, grafic card, monitor and keyboard. After starting Sax, I get a double-screen (not dead), that is divided in two, left and right(two time the same screen). Both screens are full of vertical lines so that I can not read anything.

Very probably it's a problem concerning the grafic card and/or monitor. But to install these two hardware correctly I have to start Sax/Sax2 what at the moment give me some trouble.

What's the right way to solve my problems.

Thanks a lot in advance.
Regards,
Luca

RE: trouble installing Suse7.0

Dear Luca,

Try xf86config. It might not have a graphical interface but it works fine for me. But be careful and read all messages on screen. Don't try to push your hardware over the limit as it will try to do so and you might ruin it.

Also, when setting available screen sizes (640X480, 800X600,...) for different color depths (8, 16... bit per pixel) never say you need none for a certain color depth. For one reason or another X Window doesn't accept this.

PS: YAST1 might not look as nice as YAST2, but it surely gives you more options.

Hope this helps,

Olivier

Olivier,

thanks a lot for your advices!

Once I tried to install linux using xf86config, but without the hardware handbooks. Of course I didn't get success.
The xf86config is a very information's pretending tool.
But, beliving to your advices I think the xf86 would be the only way I have in order to get success in installing Suse 7.0.
This evening I'll try (with hardware-handbooks)...

Again, thanks a lot!
regards,
Luca
