Strip material for springs
Strip material for springs
(OP)
I am looking for the minimum guarantied tensile strength of Elgiloy strip 1 mm (0.040") thick? It is intended for torsion spring design.
Is there a stronger metal commercially available?
Is there a stronger metal commercially available?

RE: Strip material for springs
Elgiloy is one of the better materials around for springs. It offers corrosion resistance as well as temperature resistance. It also carries a high price.
You can get Elgiloy with a T.S. from 200,000 to 319,000 psi. Or 1400 N/mm^2 to 2200 N/mm^2
Check with the following for available spring materials.

RE: Strip material for springs
Thanks for the info.
But I need the exact guarantied minimim tensile strength (according to any available spec such as ASTM, MIL-STD, AMS etc). The web addresses in you answero not give what I need.
I even have the data sheets I received few years ago from Elgiloy but even them give only typical values and the value sare for thicknesses up to 0.025".
I have a very strict design problem where I need to design a torsion bar spring in a very tight space. I seems that it can be done only with a stack of few long strips 1 mm thick ~12 mm wide. The spring will be loaded for constant sustained load for many years so a relaxation is a real issue. I have to design the torsion bar based on the minimum guarantied UTS.
RE: Strip material for springs
Elgiloy has very low relaxation up to 350°C.
The material standards are UNS R3003, AMS 5833, AMS 5876, and ASTM F1058
As I mentioned ion the previous post if you don't need the temperature and corrosion resistance you could look for more readily available materials.

RE: Strip material for springs
Currently the candidate is 17-7PH with UTS=240 ksi (minimum guarantied).
I beleive Elgiloy is stronger.
As you mentioned, the temperature is not a problem, what other readily available materials can you reccomend and where I can get the minimum guarantied desired UTS values.
RE: Strip material for springs
These are two materials that maybe of use. I would contact each company as to the availability and guaranteed physical properties. I’ve use them both.
