alternative to .EXE files

alternative to .EXE files

Hi Guys,
Some ISP's won't allow .EXE files to be sent by e-mail.

What's the easiest cheap alternative?

Thanks a million.

RE: alternative to .EXE files

First, change the extension from .exe, and tell the recipient what it is and that he must rename it properly to run it. Things go faster if compressed, so I usually compress with PKZip or WinZip. Just make sure you tell the recipient what he has to do to extract the .exe from whatever form you send. Also, be aware that some ISPs restrict the sizes of email attachments that can be sent. Recently, I tried to send an attachment of over 3 megabytes over a 56K modem. After a long time (twice), failure occurred with no real explanation as to what went wrong. Sending a smaller file of less than 2 meg went just fine.

Thanks Dick Russell. that's very helpful.

RE: alternative to .EXE files

Some ISPs limit attachments to 1 Mb, so it also helps to have a program that both compresses - and splits - large files so that they can be sent in fragments, then easily reassembled.

I use a program called 7-Zip; it does a great job of compressing.  And it doesn't contain adware or malware (to my knowledge.)  You can check it out at www.7-zip.com -

7-Zip is free software distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License.  And it can also be found on Source Forge.

Thanks Focht3 ! I'll have a look.

RE: alternative to .EXE files

Its not only ISP’s that restrict EXE files.

Some versions of Outlook will also block access to EXE files. There is no setting that can be changed to allow access since this “protection” is built into Outlook.

A program called EZDetatch from www.techhit.com will allow access.

Thanks Rick.

RE: alternative to .EXE files

It's also not just ISP's that limit an e-mail size. Some mail recipients have a throttle set on their e-mail that will bounce e-mails that are too large.

RE: alternative to .EXE files

You could consider putting the file (zipped for download time) on a server and just sending a link.

RE: alternative to .EXE files

In DOS U can use "SPLIT" to split a too long program into several files and recombine them with
copy/b  f1+f2..etc.. combined.exe

Thanks guys.
DickRussell's tip did the trick for me, but all the other replies were informative and helpful.
Best wishes to all for 2004.
