Inserting and Positioning a Part into a Part

Inserting and Positioning a Part into a Part

Inserting and Positioning a Part into a Part

(OP)
I have successfully been able to insert a part into another part but have trouble positioning it.  I can either rotate it or translate it but not both.  Is there any trick to this?

RE: Inserting and Positioning a Part into a Part

You should be able to freely rotate the part in all directions before you apply any mates.

Look at positioning via Distance Mates between planes.

Thanks for the reply.  I am not talking about assembly mates.  I am talking about inserting a part into another part file for use as a tool body for making a "combine" cut or whatever the correct term is.

RE: Inserting and Positioning a Part into a Part

Have you tried "Base Part"?

RE: Inserting and Positioning a Part into a Part

Sounds like you almost want to cut and paste a solid from another file and then combine them??
(I'm trying to understand your intent) If I'm on track, someone else will have to respond with the cut and paste 'how-to' - provided it can be done (as for me, I haven't gotten to that chapter yet

Base part?  I guess I haven't tried that.  I'll give it a look.

I am able to insert a part in to another part file by going to the "Insert" drop down menu and selecting "Part".  From there, I can rotate the part by entering values, or I can move it by selecting points, but I can only do one or the other.  Seems pretty odd to me.  Must be something simple I am overlooking.

RE: Inserting and Positioning a Part into a Part

I misunderstood the question.  Base Part won't allow you to move/rotate the inserted part either.

RE: Inserting and Positioning a Part into a Part

You insert your part (Insert / Part) then you can use the check box in that option to launch the Move / Copy Body functionality.  You can simply move, then rotate in 2 steps.  To get back to the Move / Copy, you go to Insert / Features / (Move/Copy)

Hope that is what you were looking for
