Animal Shelter Sewerage System Design

Animal Shelter Sewerage System Design

Animal Shelter Sewerage System Design

(OP)
I am currently working on a sewerage system design for an Animal Shelter, the local sewer authority will not allow us to discharge the "stuff" in there sytem the BOD and TSS are really >400mg/l and 153 mg/l respectively.  The shelter will have 37 kennels. Any ideas on how to treat the effluent?

Thanks

Jason McConnell

RE: Animal Shelter Sewerage System Design

This was just discussed recently under this thread:

Dog kennel - outside runs
Thread161-67075

Do a search for " " and you will find it.

RE: Animal Shelter Sewerage System Design

All the drains in the runs should go through an oil/grit separator before entering a septic tank and then on to your leaching area.  You'll need to make an estimate of the volume of water used to hose down each run on a daily basis so that your leaching area can be properly sized.  My state uses 50 GPD per run.

You should also put an effluent screen (i.e. Zabel or PolyLok) at the outlet of your septic tank(s).

You also need to review and limit what is used for any grooming operations on-site (i.e. flea/tick shampoos etc.) as some are not suitable for subsurface disposal.

RE: Animal Shelter Sewerage System Design

I am also looking to design information about how much rinse water is required (what is the ADF from the kennel?)?

What is the BOD loading rate for a dog? Nitrogen loading rate per dog?

The hope of the contractor is to construct a lagoon. Local officials don't want the lagoon to discharge. No POTW is reasonibly close enough to connect.

Any help is appriciated.

other quesitons:
Is the connection of the wash basin to the lagoon a problem due to shampoos or drugs?

Thanks for your suggestions.
