Partition model

Partition model

Partition model

(OP)
Hi everyone,

I`m working with Abaqus 6.3.1 and I do have a question. But let me explain first.
I imported a model from Catia V5 as a complete part. That means it consits of several components and Abaqus identificates it as one cell.
Now I want to mesh it. There for I have to partition it first because I do not want to use only tet elements, I need hex elements.

* The problem: When I try to partition the solid model by using a 'cutting plane' Abaqus sweeps that plane in many cases through my whole model. And that is not what I want. Are there any possibilities to limit the extension of the plane so that it partitions only the designated area? Or do I have to go back to Catia to manage it?
* Is it possible to repair a single element if it is distorted or do I have create a completly new mesh?

Thanks for your help.

Greetings Moinsen

RE: Partition model

If you don't want to partition across the whole section then partition the cell in a different direction, say orthognally to the plane you want, to create two cells, then partition the cell you want with the plane you originally wanted. You could also partition a face with a line that only partitially went across the cell and then sweep that edge across in the direction you wanted.

If an element is over distorted then you can't repair it unless you do it manually in the inp file, which isn't a good idea. Try altering the overall seeding or bias along individual lines to improve the mesh.

RE: Partition model

If you imported an assembly it will look to /CAE as if it were one single part.  If you want /CAE to automatically break it up into parts then go to the part manager and hit copy part.  One of the options (in 6.4) is to split the part up into multiple parts based on independent volumes.

If this is just a single complex part then you may want to use the "create partition N sided patch".  This tool is hard to describe, but very useful - give it a try.  Basically you can pick a number of points (or edges) on the part to define the partition.

RE: Partition model

Hi kf9ri,

I cannot find the function that you mentioned to split the part up into multipule parts based on vol. My version is 6.4.1. and can you tell me in details. thanks and have a good day...
