What is AISI 3120?

What is AISI 3120?

What is AISI 3120?

(OP)
I have tried searching www.matweb.com with no success to find out what AISI 3120 is.  I have sample parts that appear to be investment cast steel, but am being told it is a powder metal, instead.  Can any one clear up for me what this material is, and where I may find information.

May your -dv/dt always be small.

RE: What is AISI 3120?

SAE 3120 is a former SAE that is now listed in SAE J1249.  The chemical composition is as follows:

C = 0.17-0.22
Si = 0.20-0.35
Mn = 0.60-0.80
P & S = 0.040 max
Cr = 0.55-0.75
Ni = 1.10-1.40

The date of obsolescence for this grade was 1956.  FYI, there are Ni containing powder metal grades, but they would not reference the SAE nomenclature.  Cr is not a common alloying element in PM irons and steels.

RE: What is AISI 3120?

AISI 3120 is a low carbon Cr-Ni steel that is not considered a direct hardening grade.  It at one time was called a carburizing grade.
C- 0.17-0.22
Mn-.60-.80
P- .040
Si-0.20-.035
Ni-1.10-1.40
Cr-0.55-0.75

Its' well known cousin is AISI 3140 a direct hardening grade.

This material may be made a PM material but I have no information to that probability.
