converting Pro/E edu 2001 file to Pro/E pro 2001

converting Pro/E edu 2001 file to Pro/E pro 2001

(OP)
I have files created on an educational version of 2001 and cannot open them on the professional version of 2001.  First of all is this illegal to do? 2nd, how can I do this. I have heard of a converter that is an add-in to Pro/E 2001.  Where is the add-in on my program?
I have opened up two similar files, one edu and one pro, in wordPad to compare the code, and became overwhelmed with the size of the file. Does anyone have any advice?

Rustdog,

Regarding the legality of converting files from the education version to the professional version, all I can say is read the User Agreement that you approved when you installed the software. This will provide (in excruciating detail) information on the usage parameters.

That being said, a technique that I have heard of, but have not validated, is to make a UDF of the entire component (part/assembly) in the educational version and execute it in the professional version. Obviously, you must do this individually for each component you have and this may be tedious, but I have no reason to expect that it will not work.

I have also heard there is a way to change the header information so the commercial version can open educational files.

PTC does have a way of doing this because they gave eductaional versions out to everyone who took Wildfire update training at the User's group. When they posted the sample files on the web, they were commercial version files. A few days later after people complained, they posted the eductaional version files.

It might be possible to do with text editors, however it would be time consuming.

Professional files can be opened on Educational however the reverse is impossible so companies don't hire college students to do their work for cheap and make alot of money.

You should be able to export as IGES and lose parametric models.

If you have all your trailfiles handy you could have fun deleting the license timeout lines and have a fun time watching yourself make a ton of mistakes and view the history of your model creation. However a seriously doubt that you could accomplish this task although it should be possible.
