Load break elbows on transformer with open point

Load break elbows on transformer with open point

Load break elbows on transformer with open point

(OP)
Hello,

I'm trying to determine whether i need 2 load break elbows on a single phase pad mounted 28kV/16kV transformer with an open point.  The transformer is one of many in a subdivision.  It is at the end of a run and is not connected back into the phase to create a complete loop.  The company standard that i have is designed for the transformer to be fed from both sides and have an open point, where as the one in question won't be fed from both sides until a few years.  The standard states that the transformer will contain 1 elbow surge arrestor, 1 parking brake surge arrester, 2 bushing inserts, and 2 load break elbows.  Now since i am not connecting to the transformer from both sides,  what do i change/eliminate from the transformer?  Something is going to change and i think it may be a removal of one of the load break elbows but im really not sure.  Can anyone clarify this issue for me?

Thank You very much to anyone who replies,

Tyler

RE: Load break elbows on transformer with open point

If it is one of many, I would keep it the same as others so that it does not become an odd equipment. This keeps the inventory simple.

Plus why pay more or waste time (time is money) to get something less for no real benefit!! Nickel and diming does not equate to savings.

RE: Load break elbows on transformer with open point

If you do not have the second cable installed to the transformer, you will not need the second loadbreak elbow as you have stated.  You will also not need the parking stand (brake??) arrester.

The transformer will have two bushing wells, internally bussed and connected to the primary winding of the transformer.  Each will require a bushing well insert.  The incoming cable will be terminated with a loadbreak elbow which will be pushed onto one bushing well insert.  The elbow surge arrester will be pushed onto the other bushing well insert.

If the other cable were installed, a parking stand arrester would be placed on the parking stand (part of the transformer) and the loadbreak elbow of the second cable would be pushed onto this arrester.

RE: Load break elbows on transformer with open point

Leave the transformer the same as the others.  On the unused bushing you need an insulated protective cap similar to a  Cooper  # 500-21.

BJC,

He needs to use the unused bushing for an elbow arrester.
