Graphite Bearing Material for Seawater Pump
Graphite Bearing Material for Seawater Pump
(OP)
I'm currently using US Graphite Grade 14 as a plane bearing material in a seawater pump. My problem is that the material is hygroscopic. Over time, it swells and takes up my pump clearances. Is anyone aware of a graphite bearing material that is not hygroscopic?
Thanks,
Eric

RE: Graphite Bearing Material for Seawater Pump
Your query from 18 Oct.
Why has it to be graphite containing?
We on board are long ago "off" from this material, except when polishing, then using it in powder form.
Graphite in any grease form will one day cake or crust, even when contained in oil.
Now we wait till a manufacturer starts throwing......!!
And for places 'open' so sea-spray or even water-on-deck during rough weather, we use *COPASLIP*.
Anti seize assembly compound.
Quite expensive but very satisfactory.
*COPASLIP* is manufactured by *MOLYSLIP*
It never hardens, sets or melts.
Unaffected by expansion, contraction or vibration and is lead-free. As a price indication: 5kg = PdStl. 57.-
For further information:

(Not *COPASLIP* related) But molybdenum (MPGM)
And more drastically measures:

Hope to lead you lead-free (watch the pronunciation here!)
