Tool Steel

Tool Steel

I am looking for a good publication or two on application engineering of tool steels.  Specifically, shock and wear resistant tool steels like AISI S-7.  My interests are in specifications for heat treatment and practical hardness ranges of shear knives for cold shearing of steel plate.

RE: Tool Steel

Checkout the following:

www.asminternational.org

www.techstreet.com

There are quite a few books out there on tool steels and their uses.  This is information that used to be given out by the steel producers for free.

Thanks for the help, maui and unclesyd.  This is exactly what I needed (and more)!

RE: Tool Steel

ASM has some very good publications: Heat Treaters Guide, Steel Heat Treating and the hand books. Contact ASM for more info.

RE: Tool Steel

I was in the forging industry for some time and we cold sheared round and square alloy steel bars daily. A good material for this application is made by Finkle. It's name is Shell die.
Heat treat with double temper to 48 to 52 HRC and freeze to below -125 D.F. between the tempers. Use a tempering temprature beyond the secondary hardening hump in the hardness vs tempering curve. In other words use the highest possible tempering temprature. Shell Die is a modified H-13 that Finkle makes for the forging industry. H-13 can be used but is not as durable.
Good luck

Thanks for the information, fritzcoinc.  What temperature is your sheared material?  You are using a hot work ("H" Type) material that is commonly used for hot shearing (~1300-1700 degrees F.) steel bars and plate.  My only experience in cold shearing has been an S-7 (Shock Load type)or similar proprietary grades for cold shearing (below 1000 degrees F.)

RE: Tool Steel

We were cold shearing carbon and alloy rounds up to 3 3/4" and squares up to 4" at room temp. to 300 D.F. Although Shelldie or H-13 are hot work tool steels they worked very well in our application. The blades were pre-heated before use.
We did use the S series tool steels for cold coining of carbon steel logo plates.

RE: Tool Steel

FYI, the company to which fritzcoinc referred is A. Finkl & Sons Company.  Their Internet site is:

http://www.finkl.com

ShellDie® is a modified H-11 steel.

Cory
