what is the chemical composition of cast iron ggg40<\b>

RE: ggg40

There is no standard specification for chemical analysis the requirements are based on properties and each foundry uses its own analysis ranges to achieve the required properties.

RE: ggg40

I think you mean Grey cast iron grade 40 (40ksi UTS) likely a hypo eutectic grey iron, IE. 2.0%<C<4.3% some amounts of silicon and then some manganeese (to form MnS) and other common iron alloying elements. More important than chemistry with the grey irons is matrix microstructure and graphite morphology.

RE: ggg40

Hi

The chemical composisition to GGG 40 is function the your thickness.
But frequenttly the  range of equivalent carbon is 4,2 to 4,4%  because  the graphite flotation and to the  casting soundness this relation is a good information
% C + Si/7 > 3,9
The Manganese must be very low 0,20% max because your pearlt effect.
I use this comosition

C 3,40 a 3,60
Si 2,50 a 2,70
Mn0,20 max
P 0,05 max
S 0,01 max
Mg 0,03 a 0,08

Other informations please contact

RE: ggg40

NickE ggg40 is a nodular (ductile) iron designation.

RE: ggg40

AHHH! where is the ggg40 designation used? Is it US?

nick

(I just figured a typo or that ggg was something to do w/ grey iron)

RE: ggg40

Nick - Originally a German DIN designation subsequently adopted by ISO.

RE: ggg40

Carburize
Thanks for the clarification. I too was relating it to grey iron casting. Infact GG series is now grey iron and GGG is related to ductile irons. I have reproduced an extract in German giving mechanical properties of GGG 40. hope it is helpful.
Thanks once again.

RE: ggg40

what is its IS equivalent?

RE: ggg40

GGG 40 is Spheroidal Graphite iron (Ductile) casting.
More popularly known as SG iron.
The standard specification is BS EN 1563 released in the year 1997.
Chemical composition and hardness left to the discretion of the foundry if not specified by the purchaser.
Tensile 400 N/mm2
Elongation 15 %
0.2 % proof stress 250 N/mm2
Indian equivalent is IS 1865: 1991 grade SG 400/15
