(OP)
Has anyone successfully simplified using a waterside economizer and an airside economizer on air handlers using chilled water?

The problem I see occurring is sorting out the proper sequencing and possibly complicating a system with little to gain from the plate and frame HX except under conditions where OA enthalpy may be too high for the airside economizer.

Any thoughts?

RE: Free Cooling

Consider waterside economizer only if airside economizer will be hard to implement because AHU(s) are remote from OA source & remote from where to relieve the return air.

On water side economizer - don't use strainer cycle. I say installation where chilled water piping was badly corroded because the automatic backwashing of the strainer allowed in too much makeup water overwhelming the water treatment, causing severe corrosion problems. The manufacturer of the strainer system went out of business. Use flat plate heat exhangers instead.
