how do i remedy a noisy gear box on a harrison m300 centre lathe?

(OP)
Hi...

I have a harrison m300 centre lathe, which i have just bought second hand.. and down in the low gear ratios there is a lot of grinding noise , specialy when i'm cutting any kind of metal.... now there is none of the gear train wheels rubbing or fouling anything.....albeit i noticed some iron dusting in the oil galleries which are situated in the top of the gearbox...but fortunatly due to the design , this is not getting down onto the mandrel bearings... i would appreciate it if someone could advise me if there is a remedy for this ...... i have added the recommended oil to the gear box........ (Tellus 68)..... so is it possible to replace this oil with a higher viscosity oil to cushion the gear train, or can i add some type of additive to the existing oil to eleminate this noise??
