Wood shearwall anchor splice with foundation steel
Wood shearwall anchor splice with foundation steel
(OP)
I would like to know if anyone can recommend a reference that provides design information for a wood shearwall anchor bolt (bent bolt or chemical anchor) into a solid-grouted CMU foundation wall (with concrete footing), that accounts for the interaction with the vertical steel in the foundation wall. The reference I currently use is Section 2107.2.3 of the 2000 IBC (similar to ACE 530 Section 2.1.8.6.1.1 except that IBC has a minimum splice length of 15" instead of 12"). I'm not sure if this is the best, or most applicable, reference to use for this type of connection.

The Simpson anchoring and fastening systems catalog has design values for epoxy anchors in grouted CMU. But, the design values do not account for the vertical reinforcing steel in the CMU wall (such as a #5, in the same cell as the anchor, that is continuous from the footing - with a spcified hook - to the top of the CMU wall). What I would like to know is how much extra (tensile) strength do I get from the wall reinforcing (assuming some overlap of the holdown bolt and the CMU wall vertical reinforcing steel)?

1. The tensile loading capacity on the gross area of the concrete filled block core.
2. The tensil loading capacity of the rebar connected to the footing.
Don't forget to take into account the dead load weight of grout filled core of the block wall.
At least this is how I would look at it.
