Safety Video

Safety Video

(OP)
A number of years ago, a safety training video was released demonstrating the use of HRC fuses, possibly produced by GEC Fuselinks. The video ended by doing a short-circuit fault test on a panelboard protected by HRC fuses, which was quite uneventful. The test was then repeated with the fuses replaced by links, the result of which was the panelboard blew up. It was quite vivid.

I want to know if anyone knows where I might get this video for the benefit of our health & safety department. Many of my colleagues remember it as the 'GEC Video', but none of us can locate a supplier. Any clues?

RE: Safety Video

I have recently done a HV Authorised Person training course at Schneider Electric in Chippenham, Wiltshire.  On that course they showed the video to which you refer (I have seen it several times in the past as well).

You could try contacting the Schneider Electric customer training department on 024 7684 7547 (Coventry, UK) to see if they can help.

Regards,

Brian

RE: Safety Video

Only slightly related, I once saw a safety video advocating the use of fused leads on a multimeter. It showed what happened if you attempt to measure a mains 415V voltage with the leads inadvertently in the "current" measurement sockets.

With fused multimeter leads there was a nasty bang and a bit of a flash, but not such as would cause major damage.

With unfused leads, the multimeter literally exploded, with such force that it looked like it would have blown somebodies hand off.

Guess what - I bought fused multimeter leads ...

RE: Safety Video

Scotty — Bussmann and Ferraz-Shawmut {in the US, anyways} have offered vivid demonstration films with regard to low-voltage current-limiting branch/feeder fuse application.

One question, tomatge — If the fuses are probe-mounted, how do the probe cases and one’s fingers hold up to fuse rupture?  Can you tell us who the probe/fuse producer was?  “Silver Power” sent me a sample a few years ago.  The problem was that they rated the set at IEC (6)1010-1 category IV, but I couldn’t get any evidence that “dynamic” laboratory testing had been actually conducted to support their claim.

Busbar

Dunno - I've never tried a live test. But if the video was anything to go by, it would make the difference between burned hands and no hands !

If anyone cares to try it, they could always get a friend to type in the outcome to this forum.
