Using API 5L pipes with ASME VIII div. 1
Using API 5L pipes with ASME VIII div. 1
(OP)
Hello members,
Is it allowed to use carbon steel pipes of API 5L for pressure vessels of ASME VIII div. 1 ?
If yes, where could I find allowable stress and yield strengths at Temperature ?
Thank you for reply.

They may be dual marked-say API 5L/SA,A-53 or SA-106. See
SecII Part A for the specs. If in doubt check the MTRs. Be careful sometimes dual marked pipe does not have the required flattening test.

Secondly there are some important difference between API 5l Pipes and ASTM grades. API 5L pipes are to be ordered on OD(From year 2000 Onwards) where as ASTM are generally ordered on NPS. In case of 4" pipe (in ASTM it is NPS)the OD is 114.3mm and in case of API pipes the OD is 4".
Testing and sampling plan for API 5L is different from ASTM A106 Gr B. Also Chemical Analysis requirements are different. In case of A 106 Gr B Cr, mo, Ni and other elements are required to be reported, where as in case of API 5l it is not mandatory.
As regards welded pipes API 5l allows expansion(Expanded pipes) where as in case of some of ASTM this issue is not addressed (So be careful and take advise of AI).
If you are stuck, use it as Un identified material and perform Check analysis.
Dual marked pipes are acceptable. Only API 5l marked pipes are strict no.
