Tack Welding an SAE J429 Grade 5 Hex Bolt-1/2"

Tack Welding an SAE J429 Grade 5 Hex Bolt-1/2"

(OP)
Is it permissible to tack weld an SAE J429 Grade 5 1/2" Hex Bolt when the bolt is used to secure an OSHA Fall Protection Anchor?  I am not comfortable permitting this, but I would like to see if anyone out there has any other information on the issue.

Thanks.
Katie Davis, P.E.

I don't know about the code-legalities involved, but welding such bolts is inviting cracking in the HAZ.  I'd require, at least, preheating to ~350 deg. F., which won't soften the bolt.

If you are just wanting it for antirotation or locking just tack by it. All our safety line anchor cables in pipe bridges have the nuts tacked to the bridge steel at the support stanchions.
We have welded nuts on ASTM A193 B-7 studs (a similar material)for years with no problems. We used an AllState 275 or a 312 S/S rod. Though lately a lot have been welded with 7018.

I don’t have the current requirements for safety lines and anchor lines,  but I understand some have came out.  I would check.  Even if its only a safety guideline follow it as it will soon be a requirements.

Thank you for your responses.  This is exactly what I thought.  Have a great day!
