Magnetic Motor Wedges
Magnetic Motor Wedges
(OP)
Could someone explain to me what magnetic motor wedges are and what they are used for? Also, how could you tell if a motor has them by visual.
Thanks

RE: Magnetic Motor Wedges
The way I look at it from an intuitive (probably incorrect) viewpoint, they reduce the effective air gap, which might tend to improve power factor.
I have heard someone say they reduce zig-zag leakage flux, which decreases leakage impedance.

Please take all the above with a grain of salt... a little out of my area.

As pete says, magnetic wedges (fitted in stator slots) are used to reduce zig zag reactance losses and especially pole face losses in salient pole generators.
You can identify these wedges by using an ordinary magnet. The wedges will attract to the magnet.
