What would be the advantages / disadvantages of two external ball return tubes vs one, given all other specifications of the ballscrew are equal? The application here is on the Z-Axis of a Chiron vertical machining center which not only carries the spindle but also the the tool change assembly.

Redundancy lowers the potential for catastophic failure.  You can also adjust the preload....
