Aluminum Alloy Coefficient of Friction

Aluminum Alloy Coefficient of Friction

Aluminum Alloy Coefficient of Friction

Does anybody know where I can find the coefficient of friction for Aluminum 383 Casting Alloy? I have searched various websites and have not been able to find anything. Thank you.

RE: Aluminum Alloy Coefficient of Friction

Friction coefficient data is not published heavily, and it won't be listed for every alloy.  You will be lucky to find data for "cast aluminium alloy", let alone alloy 383.  What is the mating surface?  Are there any coatings, lubricants, etc.?  With more information, you can get a better answer.

Cory

RE: Aluminum Alloy Coefficient of Friction

I'm like "CoryPad" I have never seen any data on AL or its Alloys. All I now is that anything rubbing on Al isn't good. I know the auto industry has done work on this while testing alloys for engines. What about the sponsor of this web site, can’t remember their name or even the othe fellows that start with a B.  Another place to check would be the NASA tech briefs. I had a brainstorm that didn’t work out. Had an article on Al bolting no mention and in the torque calculation they use .2 k.

I am looking for the coefficient of friction for press fitting a 52100 steel pin into an Aluminum Alloy casting, with no lubrication. Thank you for your help.

RE: Aluminum Alloy Coefficient of Friction

Mark's Handbook shows values up to ~ 0.6 for steel on aluminium, although I believe that is in vacuum.  For your conditions, I believe that the minimum value would be ~ 0.2.  If you need better information than the range 0.2-0.6, then you should perform testing.  This can range from a simple drag test, or an inclined plane test, to a fully instrumented version of your pin insertion.  There is a standard for friction testing: ASTM G 115 Standard Guide for Measuring and Reporting Friction Coefficients, available from ASTM International at:

RE: Aluminum Alloy Coefficient of Friction

Watch your fit when inserting into an aluminum casting, depending on the alloy, some have very little ductility. If you have a long insertion length I would cosider a dry lubricant or phosphate the the pin.
