Spec a heat treat for a large aluminum weldment
Spec a heat treat for a large aluminum weldment
(OP)
We need to spec a heat treat for a large aluminum weldment we are having fabricated for a vibration fixture. It will be fab'ed from thick aluminum plates. Could you help us with the proper heat treat requirements?
The material is ALuminum 2219-T87
We want to restore the all the material properties after welding.
Thanks

RE: Spec a heat treat for a large aluminum weldment
Tensile = 55ksi
Yield = 38ksi
These values are based upon using an ER2319 filler metal.
You may want to contact Alcoa (www.alcoa.com) or Alcotec (www.alcotec.com) for more info.
RE: Spec a heat treat for a large aluminum weldment
1) The parent material is in the T8x condition, which is solution heat treated, cold worked and then artifically aged. Near the welds this temper will be lost. After welding you could solution heat treat and artifically age, but the cold working cannot be done. However, solution treatment and artifically ageing (giving T6) will restore most of the strength.
2) More of a problem are the welds. You do not say what filler material is used. Depending on its specification you may or may not be able to achive a strength close to the parent material.
3) For a vibration fixture the fatigue properties will be important. However you heat treat you will not get back the fatigue performance of the parent material.
