Calculating weld strength

Calculating weld strength

Calculating weld strength

(OP)
How do you quickly calculate the strength of a weld in bending?  For example a fillet weld on a large lug welded to a beam, where the load is parallel, in plane to the weld and offset. Methods I've researched either require a huge weld for the large force at the weld ends, or take a force 1/3 from the ends and calculate for that load.  Which one is correct?

RE: Calculating weld strength

Take the throat thickness of the weld as the width and calculate the area and inertia as you would a beam section, then work out the stress on this section as you would the beam section with an applied moment and force. The method is described in the Steel Deigner's Manual. The weld stress should be less than half the yield of the parent metal,if my memory serves me well.
