I am looking for some information on heat treating stainless steel. Can I heat treat a 304 stainless to 40-45 RC?

RE: heat treating stainless steel

Please refer to earlier threads posted in this forum on increasing hardness of 304 .

RE: heat treating stainless steel

LGG, you can work harden 304, you can carburize it (see Bodycote's Kolsterizing process) and you can nitride it.  The latter two are case hardening operations.  You cannot heat treat 304, using a quench and temper process, to get it harder.
