Culvert Design

(OP)
HI ALL,
PLEASE I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF A PROJECT THAT INVOLVES THE DESIGN OF CULVERTS WHICH I MUST SAY I DON'T HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE IN.  THE AREA IS IN A FLOOD PLAIN AND AS SUCH GETS FLOODED PERENNIALLY AND EVEN OVERTOPS THE ROADS BY HIEGHTS OF OVER 1METER. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE ROAD LEVEL OF THE ENTIRE ROAD NETWORK BE FILLED TO A HEIGHT THATWILL ELIMINATE OVERTOPING. IN ODER TO DO THIS I HAVE TO DESIGN  CULVERTS THAT WILL CROSS THE ROADS. .
Q1. HOW DO I EFFECTIVELY ESTIMATE THE QUANTITY OF WATER THAT WILL DISCHARGE INTO  THE CULVERTS?
Q2. WHAT WILL BE THE BASES OF SELECTING HW
Q3. HOW DO CARRY OUT THE DESIGN OF THE CULVERT ITSELF? DO I DECIDE FROM THE BEGINNING WHAT SHAPE OF CULVERT I MUST USE OR IS THEIR A FACTOR THAT WILL DETERMINE THAT?
Q4. HOW CAN I DEVELOPE A PERFORMANCE CURVE FOR EACH CULVERT I DESING AND WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS CURVE IN REAL LIFE PRACTICE.?
APPRECIATE YOU RESPOSE.
REGARDS,
KAIZER

RE: Culvert Design

Kaizer, Please drop the all caps.  Hard to read. What you seek is about one-half of a hydraulics/hydrology design course.  Perhaps your firm should hire an engineer who's taken the course already. Bill Holt

RE: Culvert Design

Kaizer,

I second the no caps comment; they make your note really hard to understand.

Look for a copy of HY-8 software from either McTrans or PC-Trans. Both have a manual sponsored by FHWA that is very comprehensive. You will be learning a lot and should have the time to do so or your work will be incomplete.

The performance curves are needed to satisfy flood plain issues.

Good luck!

RE: Culvert Design

Hire someone or sub it out to another firm...Culvert design isn't just something to slop together...
