Super-Bainitic Steel

Super-Bainitic Steel

Super-Bainitic Steel

(OP)
The 'Super-Bainitic' class of steels (Fe-3Cr-W-V)have a combination of high strength and high toughness. Anyone have any ideas how to retain these properties when rolling down to very thin (~0.010") strip?

RE: Super-Bainitic Steel

Do these steels get the strength by work hardening? If  so possibly a heat treat, then a skin pass or stretch leveling to apply the proper amount of CW. Other wise you could form in the dead soft condition and heat treat after.

RE: Super-Bainitic Steel

These low carbon alloy steels were developed for high temperature applications and achieve their high temperature strength through proper heat treatment.  After rolling to size they will require proper heat treatment - usually normalizing and tempering.

You may wish to consult JSW or Vallouric & Mannesmann for further info.

RE: Super-Bainitic Steel

The key to the strength of the bainitic , W modified steels is to retain the bainitic crystal structure. If heat treating occurs, the cooldown rate must be controlled to a fast rate to prevent formation of ferrite or non-bainite crystals.
