Protective heat shields on flanged joints
Protective heat shields on flanged joints
(OP)
Has anyone experience with protective heat shields on flanged joints ? As i understand it these shields are used to protect the flanged joints on hot lines from cooling due to precipitation (rain, snow etc)which can lead to uneven stresses in the joint resulting in leakage. As a rule our flanged joints are not insulated if the line is insulated due to the possibility of leakage going undetected if covered with insulation and cladding.

RE: Protective heat shields on flanged joints
My experience has been with protective flange "covers" or "guards" which were applied on all piping flanges. ( these are also called "spray shields".... see www.firwin.com for an example)
These flange covers were essenially short cyliderical plastic or metal devices that were designed to protect personnel from liquid spray, should there be a gasket failure. The guard would not stop the leak, but it would prevent a spraying condition.....gasket failures would merely drip.
Are these the devices you are talking about ?
