Power Engineering Web Reference

(OP)
Hi,

I am trying to find a web reference to allow me to understand some electrical power terms, components ..etc

Could someone please refer me to some kind of a directory, reference or something. if not power then general Electrical would do.

Thanks,
Mel

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

This is helpful, but i am rather looking for something more specific and informative. e.g, i would like to find out what is a switchegear, its operation... or a circuit breaker application.... this is what i am after. how do some of these devices operate??

Thanks again
Mel

RE: Power Engineering Web Reference

Hello Mel,

There are many sites on the web with basic information on electric power. For example:

http://saskpower.apogee.net/foe/home.asp

The best thing to do is google search on your own. For example, if you want to learn about circuit breakers, do a google search on "circuit breaker fundamentals". Once you've learned the basics, you can try "circuit breaker applications"...and so on. It's amazing how much info you can find on your own. Eventually you may need a good basic textbook.

Thanks alot, i will give this a shot, although i have been doing it, but i think i have been using the wrong words, e.g. introduction to xyz etc.

Thanks,
Mel

Many engineering aspects of switchgear are covered in IEEE Power Substations & Power Switchgear, Circuit Breakers and Fuses [ISBN 0-7381-3656-5 Product No. SE110-TBR] but it is not “free” and is not usually considered ‘fun’ reading.

RE: Power Engineering Web Reference

You will learn much about the components used in power engineering from the major manufacturer's websites. A glance along my bookshelf suggests ABB, Alstom, GE, Groupe Schneider, Siemens, Westinghouse, GEC, FKI Engineering as possibilities. All these companies have websites from which you will gain some idea of what the elements of a power system do and what they look like, and quite often have application examples.

Suggestion: IEEE has various standards that cover definitions and explanations of electrical and electronic terms, e.g.
IEEE Std 100 "Dictionary"
