Does someone still manufacture a sonodur-type hardness tester?  I did a quick search and was surprised that I was unable to find someone who does.  Is there a problem with using these type of testers?

Thank you,
Grant

RE: Sonodur tester

Krautkramer manufacturers its MIC 10 series of hardness testers, which are ultrasonic "sonadur" type testers.

I know some people consider this a waste of bandwidth, but I do want to let you know I appreciate your help.  Thanks for the link.

RE: Sonodur tester

To answer the 2nd half of your question, when properly used and maintained, I have found very good correlation between hardness made using the MIC10 tester, telebrinneler tests and a Vickers tester as primary refererence. It has generally proved a highly effective field tool for determining weld and HAZ hardness.

Having said that, when the MIC10 tester was damaged from handling by field inspectors but the damage was not evident, erroneous readings were readily obtained, and it required a knowledgeable individual to ascertain that the equipment was malfunctioning. Periodic checks should be made on a variety of known hardness test bars to confirm accuracy.
