The prior thread and references on the PBMR reminded me of a question I have wondered about.  Hoping someone may be interested enough to clear it up for me.

The question is how does one determine what the expander exhaust temperature will be from a gas turbine expander such as the helium turbine in the PBMR?  e.g. turbine inlet at 1000 C helium at 100 KPa, then the diagram immediately states the temperature into the aftercooler at 400 C.  I can't seem to get to it from the gas laws since there would be two unknowns, (pressure and temp). I assume the answer has to do with enthalpy and specific heat of gas.  Is it entirely based on manufacturer's data, or are there general equasions for theoretical situations? e.g. given an "adiabatic efficiency" (compressor efficiencies are another puzzle to me)?  Thanks.

Sorry, dumb question.  Looking at diagram again, delta T is in regenerator.  duh h  h!  

So does P1*V1*T1 = P2*V2*T2 approximately hold for expander if no cooling / mixing provided?  Meaning outlet temp approx = inlet temp?  Thanks.
