Adding hole to side of cylinder? Hole placement?

Adding hole to side of cylinder? Hole placement?

Adding hole to side of cylinder? Hole placement?

(OP)
I am trying to add a threaded hole to the side of a cylinder and the program doesn't seem to let me do that.  I am also adding threaded holes to a surface but don't see how to place it in a specific spot, only where the mouse clicks.

Any info?

Cosmetic Thread?

Not possible on a round cylindrical model. Because the edge is not round, it is seen as and ellipse. You could try adding a Cosmetic thread from the drawing but I think you will get the same result.

True Helixed thread?

You only need to learn how to do cut-sweeps using a helix. It's the same as a boss-sweep. See example at www.scottjbaugh.com

RE: Adding hole to side of cylinder? Hole placement?

Cosmetic threads on a cylindrical surface is hit-and-miss.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it will not.  You should first select the surface before selecting hole wizard.  In my experience, that improves the odds of it working especially with SW2003 (better than previous versions).

To put a threaded hole in a specific location, you have to either add relations or dimensions as you would with any other feature.

Just another idea here...   since it is relatively difficult to start a drill bit or a tap on a round surface (and when the part is made it will probably get a small flat put there first) you may want to add a small counterbore, slightly larger than the tap, and just deep enough to meet the tangent of the cylinder.  Then your hole wizard and cosmetic threads will work very well.

RE: Adding hole to side of cylinder? Hole placement?

One problem you may be running into is the "Solution cannot be determined" error when you edit the first sketch under the hole feature in order to specify the exact location you want the hole.  When putting a hole directly on a cylindrical surface, edit that first sketch under the hole feature, then apply a coincident constraint between the point and a plane that intersects the location you want.  I think the problem is that Solidworks puts a coincident constraint between the surface and the point, causing conflicts later.

RE: Adding hole to side of cylinder? Hole placement?

I just tried putting a cosmetic thread on a hole through a cylinder wall and it worked fine, even with the saddle-shaped edge (SW2003, SP4.0).  I made the hole as a cut first, and then added a cosmetic thread ("Insert --> Annotations --> Cosmetic Thread")  Make sure you have the hole edge selected first.

The thread does not look complete in the model but looks fine in a drawing.

BlindChickenRacing:
Do some experimenting with the hole wizard.  Hole poitions are constrained after they are placed.  Constrain the points in their sketch just like any other sketch geometry, with constraints and dimensions.

Also, try plaing the holes on a datum plane tangent to the cylinder instead of directly on the cylinder face.  Have the plane selected before activating the hole wizard.  That way your position point sketch is a 2D sketch on the plane, which should give you better functionality for this operation.

All this machinery making modern music can still be open-hearted.
