moving old configuration to new install

moving old configuration to new install

moving old configuration to new install

(OP)
SW2003 sp3.1

I hade a complete HD failure yesterday and had to re-install everything.
Luckily my company has a backup utility.

Is there or are there configuration files that I should recover to put into the SW directories to get back my configuration they way I had it.

If so, can someone please provide the names of the files.
I would appreciate it.

I had just finally gotten everything the way I liked it and then this happened?
Woe is me.

RE: moving old configuration to new install

There is a tool called the "Copy Options Wizard" that lets you copy, save, and transfer option settings from one computer or user to another.  Unfortunately, SW does not keep a "running copy" of your options in a separate file; the file needs to be exported before the crash.

On the upside, you will be able to copy options from someone else's station.

All this machinery making modern music can still be open-hearted.

RE: moving old configuration to new install

As stated above, the registry settings are lost unless you've got an IT guy who really knows his stuff. (not impossible but takes about an hour if careful and he will also need an editor which will read the backed-up reg. settings)   - that is if the backup utility is set to back those up as well

But a couple of these may help....
1) The 'username'.cus file ("hardrive/programs/solidworks/user/username.cus") will have your customized keyboard shortcuts.
2) If you had the macro toolbar active, the macros folder in SW will be there.
3) Dimensional favorites will have a .sldfvt stored at the point of your choosing.
4) Any self created palette features, parts, and form tools will be there as well as downloded skins.

Hey Tick,

I tried using the copy options wizard but the existing users list box is empty and there are no names listed.

Any idea what I can change so that I do appear in this box??

Thanks,
DG

Copy "From machine" instead of "from user" perhaps?  Where I am, there are no users on the user list either.  Something to do with having a "portable user profile"(sic).

I don't have this option.

Are you using the stand alone Copy wizard program (SW2003 I assume, thats what i'm using anyway)  or can you do it from within SW itself?

I have two radio choices.

From user

or

A previously created registry file.

I tried choosing the second one and location my reg file in c:\program files\SolidWorks2003\lang\userpref.reg  but it said my reg file I selected wasn't the appropriate format??

Can I physically move these *.reg files? It doesn't seem like that would work.  As the reg files wouldn't actually be registered just by copying them.
Thanks,
DG

RE: moving old configuration to new install

First you need to go to another computer and create an options file there.  Then, take that file to your computer and load it up.

One catch is that it seems that you need to have SW running when you run the wizard.

RE: moving old configuration to new install

Try http://www.nhcad.com/old/html/download.html and  download swUserPreferences.zip.

This is an old macro for early versions of SW but it will work for the majority of actual properties.

RE: moving old configuration to new install

PS - the macro should run to extract and save the master configuration. This master config can be transfered, with the same macro, to another SW installation. If you had an HD failure, there's no way to create the master from previous installation. Create one now.... just in case! (I hope that you'll never need it!)

Tick I was running the wizard on the system where I have my config I want to save it.  When I try to save I can't select a user name, even if I have SW running. Seems like it doesn't work for me.

Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree.  I just wanted a few things copied.  One big one is my toolbar settings.

Does the options wizard save toolbar seetings?

Thanks,
DG

RE: moving old configuration to new install

When you start the wizard, you should be able to select a user to copy from on the first page.  On the next page, you choose the destination.  That is where you choose to write to a file.

That's how it should work.  If not, there are bigger problems that I can't fix.

Will it save toolbars and toolbar positions if I can get it to work?

Thanks,
DG

RE: moving old configuration to new install

I've had rotten luck with toolbars.  Last time around, it did seem to do the trick, though.

RE: moving old configuration to new install

Dgiy
Your tool bar settings are saved in a file that is named:
"username".cus. This is located in a folder named user.
If you copy that file from another machine you will have that users tool bar settings. You will also need to rename the file to your user name. As for getting your old setting back there is not much you can do about that.

RE: moving old configuration to new install

The *.cus file is your file for your Shortcut keys, not your Toolbars. The toolbars are saved in the registry. You can take the chance and export those settings out. SW doesn't support it and besides if you upgrade to a newer version the paths will be different.
