ER collet dimension

ER collet dimension

ER collet dimension

(OP)
I am looking to build an ER32 collet adaptor for my lathe and am having trouble finding much info.  All I have found so far are the overall dimensions and angle of the collet, but can't find info for the adaptor.  I can estimate what I need from the collet dimensions since it's for my own use, but would like to build it properly.  Does anyone know where I can find the dimensions for an adaptor for this size collet?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

RE: ER collet dimension

What type of lathe are you trying to adapt? We chuck Cat 50 collet holders when we need to do a few small parts in our 15” chuck turning center.

It's a small bench lathe, 9" swing that I use for making some tools and small parts.  It has an MT3 spindle taper, but I would like to have a collet adaptor with a through hole for some of the long slender pieces.  5C collets are too large for this lathe and I would have to make an adaptor for 3C also, so I thought I would try the ER32 collets and build an adaptor to fit the lathe.

Does the lathe has a threaded chuck mount?

RE: ER collet dimension

The least expensive way is to purchase a 50 taper collet chuck and modify it. These usually are case hardened so you will have some difficulties machining through the case. If you should rough machine and thread it in a 3 jaw chuck. To finish machine the spindle pilot, chuck an over size piece of steel and turn it to fit the largest collet bore you can, then grip the collet on that stub to finish bore and face the pilot. This will give you the least runout shout of grinding the taper after mounting.

Good luck, Ed Danzer

Thank you Ed for the idea, that sounds like a better idea then trying to machine the taper.

I did come across a company this morning that makes just what you describe, but it sounds like it's meant more for woodworking then metalworking.  I haven't gotten a reply yet on the size collets they are designed for and the accuracy of the chuck, but for the limited quantity of parts I need to make, might be worth trying.  http://www.bealltool.com/colletchk.htm

Thanks again for your help
