What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

(OP)
Hi,
I'm translating English text from dimensional drawing of mechanical level switch into Russian (I'm Russian). There are cells "Customer", "Cust. Ref.", "Our Ref.", "Item", "Quantity", "Model" and "Tag No." in the drawing. What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean in this context?
Thanks.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

I assume item would be the description
of the part like bearing, washer, or whatever
and the tag no would be the serial or model number
which might be attached separately but also on
the part as well.  Sometime the part cannot be
on the part and a tag will be attached to quickly
identify the parts for inventory purposes.
Best guess.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

Sometimes the term 'Item' is just a numerical reference, starting at Item 1, Item 2, and so forth [like part #1, part #2, etc.]-- although as diamondjim pointed out, it sometimes is used the same as 'description' -- Tag number is usually a number to identify a specific part, in this case, a serial number (as jim mentioned)or inventory number...

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

Item number or Find number relates to the drawing parts list, to identify the individual part location.

Tag number can be for notes too.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

The Item & Tag Nos are so the item can be named/labeled in accordance with how it is so named in the customer's design drawings.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

Item is one of a number of separate things, objects, lines, inventory entries, articles etc.

Tag number : a piece of paper with a hole which you can tie
to objects you want to number

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

Item = thing or object like switch, seal, relay etc..

Tag = Lable
no = number (1,2 ,3,..or A, B C..or combination)

Tag No. = Lable description such as "Switch 20"

As you can see, the possibilities are numerous. I've been in you situations before, and the best thing to do, in my opinion, is contact the drawing's originator or company and find out what the standard callouts were at the time the drawing was created. It would be a shame to translate the drawing wrong. Most people would rather have questions asked and things done right than assumptions that may lead to something wrong.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

I've used tag number on meter runs to stamp the wellsite location.  Internally, most companies use tag number to log product to a particular file.

Item number usually refers to the product number of the manufacturer.  This is different from a serial number which identifies a particular product to manufacturer work order.

You must be into valves somehow.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

I agree with cockroach that this probably relates somehow to pressure vessels or fluid based equipment.

Tag numbers are often placed on pressure equipment to identify them within the plant, the tag number following some form of hierarchical format.

Item numbers can relate to purchase order line number, serial numbers, inventory numbers, if you are supplying as second or third tier the item numbers can relate to a number added by somebody else up the scale.

As has been mentioned, if you are in any doubt ask somebody.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

item#= it specifiy part of equipment.
tag#=equipment number, it specifiy the equipment completely.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

"tag number" is typically the alpha-numeric code that is used to refer to the component on the P&ID drawings and is usually marked, often by hanging a "tag" label, on the component.

RE: What do "Item" and "Tag No." mean?

I have seen "Item No." and "Tag No" used interchangably in the Petro-Chem Equipment field. A heat exchanger , for example , may be designated as Item (Tag) No. E-500.
