ASHRAE - Ventilation - Ice Rink

ASHRAE - Ventilation - Ice Rink

ASHRAE - Ventilation - Ice Rink

(OP)
Ventilation Rates for an Ice Rink are 0.5 cfm/SF of ice area. As the facility that we are working on is ice rink only and no seating or bleahers - this is a huge ventilation rate for the size of the structure - about 8,000 cfm of OA. This requirement must be due to the gas powered ice resurfacing equipment and the associated CO production. An indoor pool has similar requirements but an exception exists for recirculated air with dehumidification. Not so for the ice rink!

Any thoughts/comments????

RE: ASHRAE - Ventilation - Ice Rink

I have been through this numerous times.  I think you might be able to handle the 0.5 cfm/sf of ice requirement with an emergency exhaust system.  Basically, you provide the appropraite exhaust (around 8000 cfm as I recall) and tie the fan into a CO monitor.  The upside is you don't have to condition the air and pay the energy penalty.  The down side is if th esucker triops in the summer it will be a dripping mess.  Regarding ventilation,I would recomend still providing adequate ventilation to pressurize the building.  I brink in enough air to provide makeup to the locker exhaust (which I draw from the rink)and still pressurize the rink.
