Round HSS beam to Round HSS col connection

Round HSS beam to Round HSS col connection

I'm designing a sign structure and was wondering what is a typical connection for the beam to column.  The cantilevered beam is a round HSS 8.625 and the column is a round HSS 10.  I would like to have the beam attach to the side of the column but I'm not sure of the most efficient way.  Ideas are greatly appreciated.

Interesting query.  As you know you'll need to ensure shear and moment transfer at the connection.  Can you advise the magnitude of your design action effects?

RE: Round HSS beam to Round HSS col connection

The connections I've seen have been for a round overhead traffic light support beam connected to a round vertical column.  In those cases the connection has a stub "saddle" section of beam welded to the column and then a plate welded to the stub, for a bolted connection to the beam.  I'm sure you could look on the web for various lighting suppliers and see examples of a typical connection.

Thanks for the replies.  I've been considering that same stub saddle connection.  I'm also looking into maybe sitting the beam on top of the column.  I'm just trying to avoid complicating the connection.  The moment at the connection is 46.6 k-ft and the shear (from torsion and lateral forces) is 10.7 k.

How about using the same size section and having a 90-degree mitred corner connection?

Not a bad idea dbuzz.  I'll give that some thought.  Thanks.
