friction across painted joint
friction across painted joint
(OP)
Anyone know the friction coefficent across two metal surfaces that are painted and then bolted together?
Currently I'm using 0.16 which is the same for lightly oiled surfaces, but does anyone know any better?
Cheers,
Andy

Friction varies so much, even for the "same" conditions. It is impossible to identify a single value for friction coefficient, so I question why anyone would publish a single value rather than a range. Ranges for "lubricated" metal parts can range as low as ~ 0.05, but my experience has been that polymers (without PTFE or other low friction constituents) should not be below ~ 0.1. Thus, I would use 0.1 to be conservative.
