Bury 15kV cables under Lake

Bury 15kV cables under Lake

Bury 15kV cables under Lake

(OP)
Have you guys have any experience in burying the 15kV cables under the long lake.  Since the lake is too wide, the client decides to cross the lake via underground.  I think I can lay the cables on the bottom of the lake or do I need to bury the cables 3-4' deep below.  What are the restriction, requirement etc.  Should I rely on the DNR for requireements etc...

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

RE: Bury 15kV cables under Lake

I anticipate you may require permits from: Fish and Game Dept, DNR, Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Corp of Engineers, Dept of transportation, US forest service, US Fish and Wildlife Dept.

Several factors determine the depth of burial, which can be determined from a Hydrographic Survey.

Are there large boats on this lake that may use large anchors?

RE: Bury 15kV cables under Lake

Consider use cable rated for underwater application (submarine cable). Length and capacitance of the cable should be considered and possible extensive permitting effort could be required as mentioned above.

In case of failure of one or multiple cable consider in advance the consequences and the impact on the system. The use of additional feeder, cable in warehouse and qualify crew to do underwater repair should be consider before final decision.

Suggestion: The cable buried in the lake bottom will be safer; however, the repairs will be more difficult. The fault location detectors have certain accuracy and to uncover the cable at the lake bottom, e.g. couple of hundred feet could pose some challenge in terms of time outage. The cable design for the burial might be less expensive.

RE: Bury 15kV cables under Lake

I assume the lake is too big to go around?

RE: Bury 15kV cables under Lake

If it's a fresh water lake with no boats ( dragging anchors) or people using heaving fishing gear ( as used for sturgeon fishing ) why not use ordinary URD cable ?  Most URD cable is installed in wet ground and is essentially underwater anyway.
How wide is the lake?   Would directional drilling be feasable?
