ASME PQR's/WPS,s with & without impact tests.

ASME PQR's/WPS,s with & without impact tests.

ASME PQR's/WPS,s with & without impact tests.

(OP)
I have a WPS backed up with several PQR's all of which have had CVN impacts included. In ASME sec IX QW 403.6 the minimum thickness is limited to T or 5/8" which ever is less from that normally qualified which is 3/16" or 1/16" depending on the thickness of the test coupon. It is my understanding that because this is a supplementary essential variable QW 403.6 would only apply if impacts are required as per ASME sec VIII. All of my PQR's were performed on 1-1/2" and 2" thicknesses therefore limiting the qualified minimum thickness to 5/8" when impacts are required. But if impacts are not required the minimum thickness would be 3/16". Am I correct or does my customer have me?

RE: ASME PQR's/WPS,s with & without impact tests.

I agree with you.  If impact properties are not required, for qualification on 1 1/2" plate or greater, the minimum thickness qualified is 3/16" for ASME IX.

RE: ASME PQR's/WPS,s with & without impact tests.

You are correct; however, you will be required to state the qualification range on your WPS when impact testing is not required.  You may also wish to generate a new WPS for non-impact tested equipment using the supporting impact tested PQRs as well.
