Save As PDF...

(OP)
Is anyone aware of an option for SDRC-Ideas (drafting) to allow for saving files as ".pdf"? PDF is the Adobe Acrobat file exchange format that most people can use to look at documents. We have created a "print to .pdf" routine for our Ideas workstations that allows us to create these files from our drafting plots. The .pdf format is wonderful because it lets us email large drawings with minimal effort. Unfortunately it takes more effort than we would like to make these "plots."

RE: Save As PDF...

First, print from I-DEAS to a postscript file. Then, using a text editor, remove the first three lines, the last two lines and near the beginning of the file, the "ShowPage" line. Save the file. You now have an Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) file. Drag the file (in Windows) into the Adobe distiller. You will then have a PDF file. You may need to enter Adobe Axchange to rotate the image, but they look great and they're file size is small.

You may be able to automate this process. We haven't had a chance yet.

cbryan,

I didn't realize that an EPS was so simple to make. I should be able to use this technique on any post script file - yes? Other CAD programs (such as AutoCAD) could be used to make similar files too - yes?

I will take this for a spin and reply with my experience(s)...

RE: Save As PDF...

I have Acrobat distiller installed on my NT machine which gives me an Acrobat PDF printer. I just export a PFF in drafting and use the old plot routine to print to a PDF.  Pretty simple and painless.

RE: Save As PDF...

Did anyone ever try to automate the process of turning an SDRC ideas file into a PDF file?

RE: Save As PDF...

Is this item hot? I don't think so, but...
Anyway, the way I make drawings, made in Draft, easy to look at for the world outside our plant:
I have installed CutePDF writer.
You can find it here: http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/Writer.asp

I use the following steps:

1: File->Export->DXF (export a drawing to dxf format)
2: Open the dxf-file with Volo View Express (or any other good dxf viewer)
3: as I have installed CutePDF writer I can now print to this CutePDF writer, which makes a good pdf file.
