how do i cut hole through a filled surface?

how do i cut hole through a filled surface?

(OP)
I have an imported solid that came in almost perfect except for one surface missing.  I made a filled surface there, but there is supposed to be a hole in it(when I filled it I disregarded the hole).  I've tried the help screens, but get nowhere.

RE: how do i cut hole through a filled surface?

I had a similar situation with a cell phone face. I created a sketch relative to that particular plane and created the hole. Is this what you mean? Are you in SW2001+,2003 ect.. because commands have been added throught the versions.

RE: how do i cut hole through a filled surface?

(OP)
The filled surface end of the hole wont let me start a sketch(I assume that it's not a flat surface), so I started one at the opposite end of the part, where the hole begins.  I sketched the circle, and extrude thru cut it, which resulted in a "tube" that extends beyond the filled surface, as if it extruded a "thin surface", although the thin surface option was not checked.

Any other ideas?

you can try 3Dsketch that might help you.

I would extrude a circular surface for the hole and then trim it to fit the other surfaces.

When in doubt, always check the help

RE: how do i cut hole through a filled surface?

There are several ways to do this.  The two obvious ones are:

1) Sketch the profile of your cut and extrude a surface using that sketch through all.  Trim the filled surface using the extruded surface as the trim tool.

2) Sketch the profile of your cut and use it to create a split line in the filled surface.  Now your filled surface has been split into two separate surfaces.  Delete the unwanted surface (the hole) using delete face.  Make sure you choose "delete" and not "delete and patch".

Not 100% sure about this one but can't you solidify the surface and then cut your hole?
