RE: what does 'VS' mean in 38MnVS6?

(OP)
(!) VS is an abbreviatioin for a heat treatment process like
it is BY (best yield)

V and S is not the abbreviation for vanadium and sulphur in this particular case.

there are some other examples:
C 70 S 6 BY for conrods
C 45 VS 85 for conrods or
38 Mn VS 6 for Pistons according to Mahle specification.

does anyone know what VS means?

RE: what does 'VS' mean in 38MnVS6?

In the German material standarisation the V is used for two things viz.
If used at the end of the material name e.g. 12CrMo 19 5 V the V stands for "Vergueted" which is German for Normalised and Tempered.
If used in the name itself like 38 Mn VS6 the V stands for Vanadium.
Material 38 MnVS6 is a special ferritic/perlitic steel for precepitation hardening from hot working temperature. See
(DIN) EN 10267. The material contains 0.08 to 0.2 V and 0.02 to 0.06 S.
